Pangolin Protection Campaign

The long-tailed African Pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla), Tree Pangolin(Phataginus tricuspis) and the Giant Pangolin (Smutsia gigantean) are three of the eight extant species of the Pangolin family found in West Africa.

Over the years, pangolin population in the West African region has increasingly depreciated earning them an IUCN RED LIST STATUS as “Vulnerable”.

This can be attributed to the incessant hunting, trafficking of these species coupled with their slow reproductive rate in terms of offspring per birth. It is estimated that the species will become endangered in few years should this alarming decline rate continue.

It is of this reason that OET has joined the other environmental groups to campaign for the protection of these species. One phase of the project is to sensitize the general populace especially in regions where hunting and marketing of these species occur rapidly.

We believe that through coordinated sensitization and education about the rapid population decline of pangolins and the need to protect the remaining population, we can prevent the eventual extinction of these species.

The second phase of this project is to obtain a five-hectare forest reserve meant purposely for pangolin conservation. We are currently looking for funders and donors to support this project.
